Watching: Downton Abbey

I was almost ready to give up on the show at the end of last season after they killed off two favorite characters, Sybil and Matthew…because the actors thought they could do better elsewhere and wanted to get out of their contracts.  But I gave it a chance and now I’m ready to watch every Sunday at 9.  They knew how to get to me: cause trouble for the downstair’s maid, and totally good person, Anna, wife of Mr. Bates, maid to Mary. Can you believe these people cannot dress or undress themselves? We are still in the midst of the aftermath of Anna’s rape by a visiting servant of one of Mary’s suitors.  The perpetrator is out of the picture, but Mr. Bates knows the whole story now and is threatening revenge.  He will have to find a better approach to justice or he will be a goner, as Anna knows all too well. Last night’s show, episode 5, teased our modern 2014 sensibility and applied it to the 1920s. Edith is pregnant and no one knows about it…and her cool journalist boyfriend has disappeared! Cousin Rose has invited a jazz band to Downton Abbey for a surprise birthday party for Robert.  They are all beside themselves when they see that the leader of the band is black!  Even worse, Mary discovers Rose and the musician kissing at the end of the evening.  Mary is the perfect female aristocrat: she always knows how to disguise her true feelings with diplomatic language.

I’m watching too and enjoying it a lot…….trying to imagine how I could live in such a hierarchical society. I think I’d prefer to live downstairs……maybe not. What would it be like to have someone dress you?

I am so grateful to be living in the present time. You see what that gay (weird) guy is going through, and he is downstairs. Mrs. Hughes and Carson are living lifestyles that could go along with being gay…but never having a chance to do anything about it.

I was ready to abandon the season after Mathew’s death, but am glad to have persevered. The production value is just amazing! The costuming! The hair! I am forever fascinated and entertained. The person I wish I truly knew is Mrs. Hughes, she is so resilient, resourceful and has a great sense of humor. I’d like to know more about her.
