Watching: Maleficent. Go see it. It’s even better than you think.

In the new Disney movie, Maleficent, the main character, is a completely redone version of the same-named character from the 1959 Disney film Sleeping Beauty.

  In the original movie, she is the Mistress of All Evil, who, after not being invited to a royal christening, curses the infant Princess Aurora to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die before the sun sets on her sixteenth birthday. According to Wikipedia, the character is Disney’s version of the wicked fairy godmother from the original French fairy tale, loosely based on Carabosse from Tchaikovsky’s famous  ballet.

In the new version, Maleficent  is given a major overhaul. No longer dyed in the wool evil, Maleficent is someone we feel for. She becomes and ‘evil’ because of something awful that has been done to her. Then she meets Aurora and puts her powers to work…for good and evil, if you want to call it that. I could not take my eyes off Angelina Jolie. She was born to play this role. The same themes are there from Sleeping Beauty: Aurora, the curse, prick your finger at 16, etc. But the story is completely changed into something you can really get behind. Also, the movie is a combination of animation and live action.  I don’t want to give too much of the movie away, but it has a great mix of character and adventure…almost Hobbit/Lord of the Rings style, incredible ‘nature values’, character transformation, and two female leads!

Watch the trailer…and listen (again) to Lana Del Ray singing Once Upon A Dream;

Let me know what you think.
