Reincarnation: Joey Arias channels Billie Holiday

Now I understand that there can be life after death. If you are a creative genius like Billie Holiday was, you get to either live forever or come back in the form of an extremely talented tribute. Last night I went out to San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall with friend Linda to see Joey Arias, New York performance artist/drag impersonator bring Billie Holiday back to life. Billie would have been 100 in April, so this tour is the celebration of her centenary.

Here is a not-so-professional You Tube video of him from a couple of years ago singing Easy Living:

Joey has been working on Billie’s style for many years now and it shows. The voice is perfection. He will stay in character between certain numbers and then return to his over-the-top drag self for a few moments. There is no parody to this performance. It is all elegance and respect.  I especially liked his versions of Strange Fruit, All of Me, Easy Living and You’ve Changed. I don’t know when he will return to SF, but if you get to NYC you can probably catch his show. It’s a must.

A coincidence…I was listening to the Diana Ross soundtrack of “Lady Sings the Blues” this afternoon.  I truly love those wonderful songs!
